History:
The Hieracosphinx is a dangerous monster said to be descended from the line of the great Griffons. However, unlike their ancestors, this species prefers to live in the deserts and savannahs of the world. Here, not unlike lions or hyenas, they form prides with a matriarchal leader for the group.
Unfortunately, Hieracosphinxes are hunted for their pelts, which is said to be softer than silk. Luckily for such creatures, their ferocity has rendered many a poaching party defeated.
In ancient times, they were used as guard animals for nobles in the southern lands. They are fiercly noble to their caretakers. Today, the use of Hieracosphinxes for the use of combat has spread steadily northward. Even in the northern climes of Cwelythvir they can be seen protecting vaults of treasure or the dens of thieves.
Ecology:
As stated before, Hieracosphinxes are native to southern habitats. They feed upon gazelle and any other animal that would normally be hunted by the likes of a tiger or lion.
In rare instances a Griffon may overtake the leadership role of a matriarch in a pride of Hieracosphinxes. The Griffon takes over the role of surveying for food by flying far above the pride. Through screeches and caws the Griffon can direct the Hieracosphinxes on the ground towards their target.
