Bridges in the Medieval Era

The history of bridges goes back to the Neolithic era, where large stepping stones were placed across a river in order to ford it. Soon timber bridges followed, prototyped by felling large trees across an obstacle in order to cross it. During the medieval era, a pointed arch bridge such as the structure above became more common. Bridges are extremely important for trade, as a route made possible by the structure could save days of travel time.
