History:
The line of the Basilisks come from an unlikely source to those not trained in the history of lore and the natural world. In days before the Empyrean Apostates chose to rebel against the Deities, the Dragons created Basilisks to serve as engines of war for their battles against the other firstborn of the gods. Over time, the legend of the Basilisks spread throughout the land. They were feared and reviled by their many enemies. However, when the Dragons were in the grips of an awful war with the Deities, the Basilisks chose to betray the betrayers. Their motives did not align with those of the Deities. Instead, their covetous eyes wished for the gold hoards of the Dragons.
After the defeat of the Dragons, the gods granted the Basilisks crowns of gold, bone, or silver to forever grace their heads. This was from the wishes of the Basilisks to have a reward for their help in the battle against the Empyrean Apostates.
Ecology:
In the present day, Basilisks are the apex hunters in whatever region they choose to inhabit. They prioritize the defeat of Dragon foes whenever they present themselves, and following that they abhor the presence of mortals. Their gaze kills any who look upon it, which makes hunting extremely easy for them. They turn this extra free time into capital, venturing far and wide for all forms of gems and coin.
Other Basilisks uninterested in creating a treasure hoard instead turn their attention back to their hunting grounds. In a few short months, such territory is reduced to utter stillness as all forms of life perish from its gaze.
