History:
The wyrms were the result of the aftermath of the Imprisonment of the Empyrean Apostates which sealed away behind magickal chains the likes of dragons, giants, krakens, and other such monstrosities. Those dragons which escaped such a doom became warped and mutated. Some of their offspring would be without wings or legs, called lindworms, others without hindlegs, called wyverns, and lastly, those without any legs, called wyrms. These were the second most powerful of the children of the dragons, next only to the mighty wyverns.
Since this imprisonment some 500 centuries ago, the wyrms have done the best in adapting to life without the prescence of the Empyrean Apostates. Their scales have turned from vibrant hues to more muted, camouflaged greens and browns.
Ecology:
As mentioned, wyrms are extremely well-suited to life in the wild. They prey upon deer and elk in the northern regions of the world. For the most part they are frightened to attack mortal settlements, for fear of reprisal.
It is not too uncommon a tale for a wyrm to be spotted in the southern deserts. Such dragon kin there have tan and yellow scales in order to blend in with the sand. What they feed upon there no one knows. Some academics have posited that they subsist on the strange poolings of magick that exist in the wastelands.
