The Archaic Divinities: Lore of Cwelythvir

Overview:

The Archaic Divinities are powerful entities who wrought the world of Cwelythvir through their will. From whence they came none know, save for vague mentions of a dark maelstrom beyond the cosmos. They took a myriad of forms, and most have changed their appearence throughout the millennia without rhyme or reason.

Though the Archaic Divinities now lie imprisoned, an act undertaken by the Deities themselves, their bonds have been weakened through the use of magick. In fact, any use of the Sorcery of the Restraints inevitably breaks the tethers which restrain these horrible monstrosities.

History:

Before the realm was made, there stood the Archaic Divinities. Together they made the celestial spheres. Primeval oceans raged and mountains of dark stone shot up from the earth. Covetous of this land, the Archaic Divinities fought each other through might and will. From their ichor was spawned the Deities. Such divine beings found beauty and potential in the world they were born into. However, such magnificence was quickly being ruined by the sunderous wars of the Archaic Divinities.

Banding together, the Deities fought a war of many millennia against their progenitors. This war was soon lost on the side of the Archaic Divinities, and they were soon sealed in places remote and extreme. To this day they are attempting to destroy these chains. Through their devout followers, some of the lesser of these beings were able to escape. They now haunt the darkest of places on Cwelythvir. Luckily, none of the greater Archaic Divinities have been able to escape. At least, none that we’ve known of.

A close encounter of such an event was had nearly 10,000 years ago, when a coordinated effort was had to free the Archaic Divinities by folk of this world and not. Luckily, such an attempt was thwarted.

After the Great Evocation nearly 1,000 years ago, the Archaic Divinities have started to become more and more active. Let’s hope such awakening ceases in the future.

Magicology:

As mentioned before, through utilizing magick of the Sorcery of the Restraints a mage is able to attain magical power. As also mentioned before, such magickal energy weakens the tethers from which the power was gleaned. This works because in the ancient days when the Archaic Divinities were imprisoned, the Deiities used their magick to make the chains. Since nearly all of the magick in the world comes from either the Deities or the Archaic Divinities, mages have found that drawing from the power of the tethers allows them to access magick without having to consult with either of these dangerous entities.

The events that occurred nearly 700 years ago on the Eastern Emerald Earldoms were caused by wizards accessing the bonds of the Archaic Divinities. Such ravaging destruction serves as a reminder to be careful when drawing out such power.
